Modification of the Smart Hotstage as a Tool for Purity Testing and Characterization of Pharmaceutical Raw Materials to Achieve Health Independence" is an initiative by Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD), funded through the 2023 Matching Fund Grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek). This project aims to develop a modified Smart Hotstage as an innovative tool for testing the purity and characterizing pharmaceutical raw materials. Through this approach, UAD seeks to support national health independence, particularly by reducing reliance on imported raw materials, in line with strategic policies to strengthen Indonesia’s pharmaceutical industry. This technology is expected to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and accessibility in testing, thereby contributing to the domestic production of high-quality medicines.

The Head of the Implementation Team from Ahmad Dahlan University (UAD), Prof. Ir. Anton Yudhana, ST, MT, Ph.D., along with Dr. Arif Budi Setianto, S.Si, M.Si., Apt., a lecturer from the UAD Pharmacy Program as the first member, and Arsyad Cahya Subrata, S.T., M.T., from the UAD Electrical Engineering Program as the second member, collaborated with PT. Alfa Mas Sakti, located in Semarang, for this program.
The Smart Hotstage, a tool for purity testing and characterization of pharmaceutical raw materials to achieve health independence, funded by the 2023 Matching Fund Grant from Kemendikbudristek, was inaugurated on Sunday, March 26, 2023.
This initiative included several achievements, starting with the development of the Smart Hotstage, involving interns from PT. Alfa Mas Sakti, including students from UAD’s Electrical Engineering Program. This provided practical work experience, a mandatory course in the Electrical Engineering curriculum, conducted at PT. JMI’s workshop in Yogyakarta. The program also incorporated MBKM (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka) activities, enabling students to engage in entrepreneurial learning outside the university at PT. Alfa Mas Sakti in Semarang. Ten students from UAD’s Electrical Engineering Program participated, learning about the company’s products and entrepreneurship directly from its Director, Tofan Dwi Kristanto.
Five Smart Hotstage units, each measuring 60x40x20 cm, were produced, calibrated, and ready for operation. These units were distributed to various programs: one was handed over to the Pharmacy Program at Airlangga University, Surabaya, on November 11, 2023, by Prof. Ir. Anton Yudhana, S.T., M.T., and received by Dr. rer. nat. apt. Maria Lucia Ardhani Dwi Lestari, an expert in Pharmaceutical Formulation from Airlangga University’s Faculty of Pharmacy. The tool was tested in Airlangga’s pharmacy lab and performed well, earning positive feedback. Another unit was delivered to UAD’s Chemical Engineering Program on December 2, 2023, accepted by lab technician Nadiatika Amelia, S.Si. A third unit was handed over to UAD’s Pharmacy Program on December 7, 2023, received by Dean Dr. apt. Iis Wahyuningsih. All units functioned effectively.
The Smart Hotstage is designed for the pharmaceutical field, determining the melting point of drug materials and analyzing raw material characteristics. Supported by the 2023 Matching Fund Grant, Prof. Ir. Anton Yudhana and his team successfully developed this health-benefiting tool. Feasibility tests were frequently conducted at UAD’s Pharmacy Lab under Dr. Arif Budi Setianto’s supervision.
Following its development and testing, the team participated in two exhibitions to introduce the Smart Hotstage to the public. The first was at the Global Green Culture Innovation and Cooperation event at UAD Hall on November 17-18, 2023, and the second at the Muhammadiyah Expo at Jogja Expo Center on November 24-26, 2023.
